[All Things 3DS] Purple 3DS coming this May

First, there was Aqua Blue and Cosmo Black. Then Flame Red. Then Metallic Pink and Ice White.

These are the first few colors available for the Nintendo 3DS.

Now on the 20th of May, Nintendo will be releasing the Midnight Purple variant, and at the same time Mario Tennis Open.

Well played, Nintendo, well played. I'm, digging the new color already.

[Around the Web] Albert Einstein

Almost everyone of us know who Albert Einstein is; heck, he probably is one of the most influential persons of the modern scientific world. But I suppose not all of us know that he also did non-scientific articles.

This article gave 10 things that we can learn from Einstein. And author Paulo Coelho condensed his words for us to ponder on.

1. Follow Your Curiosity: “I have no special talent. I am only passionately curious.”
2. Perseverance is Priceless: “It’s not that I’m so smart; it’s just that I stay with problems longer.”
3. Focus on the Present: “Any man who can drive safely while kissing a pretty girl is simply not giving the kiss the attention it deserves.”
4. The Imagination is Powerful: “Imagination is everything. It is the preview of life’s coming attractions. Imagination is more important than knowledge.”
5. Make Mistakes: “A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new.”
6. Live in the Moment: “I never think of the future – it comes soon enough.”
7. Create Value: “Strive not to be a success, but rather to be of value.”
8. Don’t be repetitive: “Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”
9. Knowledge Comes From Experience: “Information is not knowledge. The only source of knowledge is experience.”
10. Learn the Rules and Then Play Better: “You have to learn the rules of the game. And then you have to play better than anyone else.”
Rules 1, 4, 5, and 9 are what I strive most of the time. How about you?

[Live by the Creed] AC fans strike back against author suing Ubisoft via....Amazon book ratings?

It seems that the guy who tried to sue Ubisoft for 'copyright infringement' never saw this one coming.

Assassin's Creed fans made their move against John Beiswenger, following the lawsuit he filed against the Montreal-based company, by listing negative reviews of his book in Amazon. The gamers found out that before the lawsuit was released, Beiswenger's book, titled Link, had only one review with a 5/5 star rating (an obvious bias, in my opinion). And this was way back in 2007.

Now it has more than 140 reviews, all of them negative.

I know it sounds like the fans are taking pot shots as the author. Valid lawsuit or not, I think it's up to the courts to decide whether it holds water, or they just throw the paper out of the window.

[Around the Web] Zerg Rush result

Well, this clearly tells me that my hand, finger and eye-coordination is simply not at par with a Korean pro gamer's.

But heck, at least I have a life.

How about you out there? What's your kill count?

[All Things 3DS] Fire Emblem Awakening release for the US and UK imminent?

Fire Emblem fans, think you're missing out because the latest iteration of the series is Japan and UK (sometime later this year) only? Well worry not, as the Fire Emblem Awakening domain has been registered by Nintendo of America. With the domain name secure, release of the game for America is very likely.

I haven't been able to play the latest Fire Emblem game, as the last time I played the title was this one. Yes, I did have trouble playing the game as it was imported from Japan and there were no English subtitles yet. I had to play with with a friend who was able to understand Japanese for me to enjoy the game and the story.

[Around the Web] Afraid of the lion?

A group of monks from the monastery of Sceta – among them the great Abbot Nicerius – were walking in the Egyptian desert when a lion appeared before them. Terrified, they all began to run.
Years later, when Nicerius was on his death bed, one of the monks remarked:
“Abbot, do you remember the day we met the lion? That was the only time I saw you afraid.”
“But I was not afraid of the lion.”
“Then why did you run like all the rest of us?”
“I thought it better to run away from a lion one afternoon than to spend the rest of my life running away from vanity.”

No Precise Pangolins were hurt during this satire.
Linux geeks and wildlife-lovers alike: as Firefox released its update, it seemed to coincide with Ubuntu launching it's twelfth iteration of its flagship OS. [All Things 3DS] Nintendo posts first annual loss. But what does it mean to us consumers?

The new Triforce in an unnamed, unreleased Legend of Zelda. If that happens,  DO WANT.
Nintendo announced its first annual operating loss. So what's to blame? Well, supposedly because of the overhype of the 3DS during its initial launch. Not to mention that the Wii, which about six years old now (though its successor is scheduled to be released later this year).

The good news behind this? Well, price cuts during the months before March 2012. Good thing I bought mine around late January, for just around US$190.00. Hehehe. Well, not that much cut but if I was an early adopter, that would've been rad.

So what was to blame? Well, mobile gaming with phones is supposedly one of the culprits they're pointing out. There's this article the Apple's iDevices are to blame. Well, what can I say? Apple knows how to innovate and exploit areas, and casual gaming is one of their playgrounds now.

So what's in store for us 3DS owners for the rest of the year?  The system update they just released resolves the issue for game patches, and we can anticipate new games like Super Mario Bros 2, Animal Crossing, etc.

Do we have to fear of less games for the 3DS because Nintendo's future in handheld gaming looks bleak because of the trend of cellphone/tablet gaming? In my opinion, hopefully it doesn't come to that. The 3DS is a wonderful console that I've come to love.

But I do love price cuts.

[Tech RDX] Mozilla releases Firefox 12 into the wild, does away with the pesky UAC

Mozilla, the company behind Firefox, has just recently updated its flagship browser to its twelfth iteration. This release features minor, incremental improvements, fixes and bug squashing, and most importantly how it updates itself in a typical Windows environment.

Yep, you read that right people. Gone are the days that the irritating Windows UAC pop-up window that keeps asking us users whether we allow the updater/program to run or not. Seriously, that's why we downloaded and opened it in the first place, right? In any case, Mozilla is trying to keep on track on how to stealthily/quietly update their browser without rousing. Well, with Firefox 12, it's a work-in-progress that's looks so seamless and unintrusive.

For technical details, read on to this Ars Technica article. Grab your Firefox 12 from the Mozilla download site here.

[Diablo III] D3 Stress Test Result

For the Horde? Oh, sorry.
So it seems that the Open Beta Weekend was indeed a stress test for Blizzard's B.net servers. I've had my share of Error 3006 and such, not to mention a few hours of sudden-server-maintenance-waiting-time during the waning hours of the Beta Weekend.

Hopefully Blizz can correct this come May 15th.

[Tech RDX] "Old Technology" is Relative

Here I am, typing this entry on an Asus Eee PC 4G that was released in 2007. Wow! My trusty ol' netbook is five years old, and the mentality of most is that the turnover rate for technology is like, every two years.

Some people would call my netbook "totally obsolete" by today's standards. But it doesn't mean its usefulness is gone too. As you can see, I use this small netbook as my mobile blogging machine when I'm away from home, and the compact size makes it very very portable.

Though I dream of the day that I want to have a better notebook computer, I make do of what I have right now. And right now, I'm content with my Eee PC 701.

But, what if, say you were hurled back into the past? I'm not talking the recent past. Distant past. And the only thing you got was your trusty, obsolete notebook in your era's time? Folks from the Dell Corporate Blog illustrated what might have happened when you bring "obsolete" tech into the past.

That'll put things into another perspective on the way you treat your old tech stuff.

The Rosetta Stone of Computer History 101.

[LaLiLuLeLo] CQC Reenactment, Boss VS. Snake

"Dammit Snake, I said 'don't eat all the glowcaps'!"

Still reminiscing Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater? Maybe you even bought the remastered version for the 3DS. But what if you wanted to recreate that famous CQC fight on your own desk?

That's right. Action figures. Big Boss'll be proud of you.

Hot Toys, an HK-based collectible toy company has released several pictures (yes, SEVERAL!) of their newest line-up: Naked Snake and The Boss, in their respective appropriate Sneaking Suits, at a 1/6 scale version. The sculpt is highly detailed, and the colors and stuff are all video game-accurate.

How highly-detailed, you ask? Check out those scars on The Boss, dude. Gruesome, semi-realistic stitched-looking scars. Oh Joy (pun intended).

Just drooling over the pictures, Hot Toys has recreated something so tangible, so life-like that no high-end video graphics could.

No word for the pricing for these hot stuffs yet, but I think they come with appropriate weapons and accessories for each character: M1911A1 .45 cal pistol, survival knife, XEM16E1 assault rifle, M63 LMG, cardboard box for Snake; Davy Crockett tactical nuke, The Patriot and cloak (wohoo!) for The Boss. Both have stands.

Oh gods I want both.

The time? According to my loaf watch, five minutes 'til you're toast.
Whoa there, cowboy (or girl). Let's stop dragon-hunting, sniper-camping for awhile (yeah, leave that poor sap of a noob for later, he deserves a few minutes of life). Can you hear it? Or maybe feel it? Or even both? Yes,, the groan, the howl, the lurch, the....

It's just your stomach growling for some food to eat. You're imagining too much.

You say you're not in the mood to make some grub? Come on, I bet my dirty laundry you play Skyrim while topless. Or even Bounty Hounds Online with no shorts on. Or even both. You get my drift; and you call that 'in the mood'? I call that lazy-ass-of-yours.

Okay, so maybe you're not that really good at cooking. No worries! This simple recipe will ensure that after you made this, your kitchen is still intact, and there's no need to call your local fire department. Hit the break to read on people.

[All Things 3DS] 3DS to Have Firmware Update, 25 April

No word on the Ice White Variant.
3DS owners, mark your calendars! On the 25th of April, Nintendo will be releasing a much-awaited firmware update for our beloved handheld consoles.

So what's in the package? For starters, we can now make folders! Yes, directories and all that stuff so we could organize them in our very own obsessive-compulsive way. Also, this enables downloading of 'update data'. What's update data, you say?

Patches. Yes, SOFTWARE AND/OR GAME PATCHES! WO-HOOO!!

Not to mention a few new titles coming up.

Does this also mean region-locking will be dissolved? Who knows?

So don't forget to back up your data, folks!

*Note: this firmware update is applicable to the US and UK versions of the Nintendo 3DS. No word on the Japanese variant.

[Diablo III] More Diablo III Screenshots

With the weekend closing fast, this would also mean that the Open Beta Event of Diablo III will also come to an end. Yes, I know. So sad. But it was fun, enjoyable. Not to mention I never get tired seeing the Skeleton King get beaten several times.

I'll just post some more screenshots of the game here. Hopefully, this will be my source of inspiration when the full game comes out later.

But for now, enjoy.

Dual-crossbow-wielding b*tchfight galore.
Secondary skill in full action. Deadly as sith.

Ensnare skill at work. Monster took a whole hell lot of beating.
Diablo III Open Beta Weekend ends on Monday, 23 April at 10 am (PDT). In SEA time, that'll be around 2 am of 24 April. If my calculation of the time difference is correct.

Happy undead-slaying!!

[Diablo III] More Diablo III Open Beta Weekend Screenshots

Stilleto heels are a must when killing undead and demons. Not to mention fashionable, even if you get killed.
It's a bright warm Sunday today, and after last night's excursion in the depths of the Cathedral of Tristram, I and a friend decided we create a new set of characters to defeat the Lich King. I mean, King Leoric (dang you Arthas!).

Prehistoric Jedi dual-wielder.
As before, I decided to go with a Monk, while my friend changed from Wizard to Barbarian. If you're asking why I chose another physical attacker: I'm not really a magic-user person. Period. I've got nothing against mages, sorcerers/esses, enchanters/ress, you name them.

Family reunions are overkill. Really.
Working overtime level: nightmarish
As we strolled down the cursed soil of Tristram once more, and a bit of power grinding up to a more decent level (around level 8 or 9), we decided that we pay a visit back to Leoric. Heck, after all, he DID kill me twice when I was using my low level Demon Hunter. Yeah, my fault for speed-running the game.

Leoric: DON'T TOUCH SANDVICH!!
"HULK SMASH! HULK SMASH! HULK....RUH OH...."
As you can see, Leoric holds a huge mace. How huge? The mace head is as big as a human's noggin' and it's as long as Leoric's legs. I've heard about royal scepters, but this ridiculous.

This bag of bones does several things: he can summon skeletal minions (an obvious skill for being the Skeleton King), teleport, and swing his axe like a madman that he was when he was still living. When he does his monkey-swinging, STAY AWAY AS FAR AS POSSIBLE. Really. Hits you hard, takes out a huge chunk of health.

After a lengthy battle with him, and thankfully not dying, we finally defeated him. Again. Too bad we couldn't do a dance on top of his freakin' corpse. Or bones. Or...whatever.

Today's menu consist of soup bones and chicken feet. No specials.
"Unless it happens during elections, lady."
So what else is new in Diablo 3? Well, as I've found out, the items in the personal stash can be accessed by your different characters. So if you were like able to loot some good items for one class that you have, simply put that item in your stash, change character, and voila. Also, quest progression is connected as well with your other characters, or so I think. Followers, such as Kormac, will not join you if you are in a party. Shame. Seems the hireling system has been overhauled.

[Diablo III] Diablo III Beta

Welcome to Sleepy Hollow.
Okay folks, here's my take on the Diablo 3 Beta. Since Blizzard announced that it's open beta weekend, a lot of people jumped into this game to try out and drool over the expected-game-of-the-year, which is supposed to be officially released this coming 15th of May, worldwide. Let's take a stroll down at New Tristam and meet the people....

*MAJOR SPOILER ALERT*: Throughout this article I will talk about the story and lore of Diablo 3. So to the newcomers of the game, or to the ones who haven't played into the open beta, consider yourself warned. Not my fault that you read the whole thing here.

Once you've steeled yourself, hit the break and let's move on.

[VG Corner] Retro Game of the Day - Prince of Persia

[Insert snazzy MIDI music and imaginary belly dancers]
Who could ever forget this game? A classic game that features side-scrolling that you can go and come back at the previous screen, jump over long gaps, deadly spikes, false floors, passing through gates in the nick of time and hurdling chomping metallic corridors. Yes, this. Is. Prince. of. Persia. Let's talk about this classy game after the break.

[Diablo III] D3 Open Beta Weekend: Error 37? Error 12? WTF?

"Please hold while we transfer you to our tech support. Sorry for the inconvenience. [insert music box tune]"

Diablo 3 fans: since it's open beta weekend, I might as well give a heads-up to you on what's going on:

  • the installer weighs in at around 44 MB or so, but downloading the game itself will set you back 3.something GB of hard drive space. So plan carefully.
  • since it's the beta of the game, multiplayer option is disabled.
  • Blizzard was kind enough to open up a Stress Test info topic in their forums, wherein they list several error guides and their workarounds.
With that, I hope you enjoy the Diablo 3 Open Beta weekend. Happy Demon-slaying!!

[VG Corner] VG of the Day - Team Fortress 2

"Hey Sarge...., are you sure we're supposed to be here and not knocking on doors saying, "Trick or treat"?
First-Person-Shooter (FPS) Players: have you ever experienced game fatigue with your favorite FPS game? From where I'm from, Counterstrike still rules supreme in terms of LAN and I've seen that the most widely-used map was de_dust, a bomb-planting map. But I digress.

Admit or not, some of us (me included) suffer from FPS fatigue; it can either stem from playing the game for too long, playing the same map all over, or your team gets pounded for more than 5 times in a row (5 is my limit before I call it a day), and rage-quit in disgust.

Or maybe that the game doesn't offer anything new anymore. After the break, let's talk more about it.

[Live by the Creed] Ubisoft Sued for Copyright Infringement

Just another day at the publisher's office....

Will this hold water, or just exploiting a game series that has been so successful? Ubisoft, the French-Canadian company that publishes the Assassin's Creed series, is now being sued by an American author for "infringing some of his copyrights and similarities of his works" to create Assassin's Creed.

Is this true? Or maybe John Beiswenger is merely toying with our minds with his Piece of Eden?

[Diablo III] Diablo Fan(atic)s, Rejoice! Open Beta is HERE!!

Now we'll see if Tyrael really pooped his armor off after destroying the Worldstone.

That's right, Diablo 3 campers. In preparation for the upcoming game this May, Blizzard decided to hold a few-days open beta. Yep, open beta. This is for those who didn't get picked into the closed-beta testing, or wasn't able to get a free CBT slot that they gave away. Well, that was for WoW-loyal players too.

Anyways, you can get the client straight from Battle.net. If you don't have a Battle.net ID yet, go make one now. It's free.

So, what're you waiting for? Demons to kill? Download the client now (which I am doing as well).

[Around the Web] Webcomics I've Grown to Love

It's the Trend of Creativity

Webcomics, as defined by Wikipedia, are comics published on a website. While some webcomics are published solely on the web or some have embraced the traditional publishing media like in newspapers, magazines, or books, the idea of webcomics are no different that what we are used to with traditional comics: the classic 3-4 horizontal panels we read from left to right, or 4 panels, in top down fashion. But with webcomics, the limitations and similarities end there. They can have 6 or more panels in either left-right or top-down, maybe even more depending on the story of the published story. They call this the infinite canvas.
My article will discuss the webcomics that I've known for around ten years or so. It won't deal with a lot of themes or genres, but these comics have made an impact to my daily, waking life in one way or another.
Let's get started, shall we? And by the way, there's no "TOP 10" or "TOP whatever number of webcomics" for me. It's a matter of reading preference.
Tales From the Pit takes on humor in the MUD. If you get my drift.
Tales From the Pit takes on humor in the MUD. If you get my drift.

Angband - Tales From the Pit

Tales From the Pit is your old-schoolMUD, set in Tolkien's Middle-Earth, specifically Angband, the home of Morgoth and Sauron. Being the forerunner of hack-and-slash and adventure gaming, this text-based story is about the player-character (represented by an @ ) Explorington III, who is sometimes a warrior, sometimes mage, sometimes paladin, depending on how his character was created during the rolling of the (electronic) dice. And why so many character classes? Well, he has this unfortunate habit of dying too many times, only to be reincarnated into another character (a sort of joke for the RNG and the 'player'). His objective (as the games' objective as well) is to reach the bottom of Angband and defeat Sauron and Morgoth. Along the way he meets other non-player characters (incompetent townsfolk in the aboveworld), mythical creatures and monsters (also of Tolkien lore), and sometimes of the divine.
This webcomic officially ended in 2010, yet can still be accessed on its website. There are a lot of humorous scenes here (especially about Sauron and Morgoth), and at times breaking the fourth wall. A must read, if you're one fond of text-based graphics.
JoT deals mostly with Mac-related stuff, but also other tech themes and such.

The Joy of Tech

Website: The Joy of Tech
JoT, created by Nitrozac and Snaggy, concentrates on technology related themes, most prominently on Macs and Mac-related stuff (OS, hardware and such). There's no continuity of story (unless explicitly indicated), and most of the techs in the comics are anthromorphic.
FOXHOUND is the Special Forces group within the US Army that was formed by the legendary Big Boss.
FOXHOUND is the Special Forces group within the US Army that was formed by the legendary Big Boss.

The Last Days of FOXHOUND

Last Days of FOXHOUND is essentially about the team Solid Snake joined in the early Metal Gear games prior to Metal Gear Solid. This webcomic deals with their new point man, Liquid Snake, after Solid Snake has left after his last mission for them. Here Liquid is portrayed as incompetent as ever, with his head and brain addled because of some mishap pertaining to an F-16 engine. Even the FOXHOUND members are not given the 'proper' treatment of being in the Special Forces group, as they always bicker with each other and try to one-up one another to the point of killing each other. Believe me, given the chance, they will slice each others' throats.
Last Days of FOXHOUND ended around 2008, weeks before the release of Metal Gear Solid 4 to the world.
If dark, adulterated, and politically-incorrect humor is what you're after, look no further.
If dark, adulterated, and politically-incorrect humor is what you're after, look no further.

Cyanide & Happiness

C & H is a webcomic that thrives on its success on its controversial nature. It strips are at times dark, cynical, sarcastic, and offensive, and the themes deal on humors about disabilities, terrorism, murder, necrophilia, suicide, STD, vehicular mishaps (be it accident, murder or manslaughter), and sexual deviancy. The punchline of their comics is not very explicit, and there are several strips that use the awkward silence style.

Least I Could Do

Website: Least I Could Do
LICD is about the antics of one Rayne Summers; a promiscuous bachelor who seems to have developed ADHD throughout the years by being sarcastic and cynical to the people around him. The comics first tackled on Rayne's flings with different women in his life, then progressed to some finer points and even tackled current events.

xkcd

Website: xkcd
xkcd (which the author admits there's no real meaning behind the four letters that he chose to make the title of his webcomic) deals with "romance, sarcasm, math and language". Topics that deal with the comic vary, from poetry to art, to math and science in-jokes that only a few of us would ever understand. The characters are simply-drawn stick figures, but there have been known to have recurring characters, such as the infamous "black hat" wearing guy.
Sinfest is a satire on religion and other stuff. Don't take it too personally.
Sinfest is a satire on religion and other stuff. Don't take it too personally.

Sinfest

Website: Sinfest
Sinfest, one of the oldest webcomics that is still in production, tells several stories of human nature; specifically on addicition (material or otherwise), sexuality, gender roles, and religion. At times pop culture will be parodied one way or another, as there is no overall overarching or continuity of the story within the webcomic itself (though there will be a several-part story, but not so frequent).
What's unique with the comic is that the author uses epigrams to describe either himself or the theme of the webcomic published.
If you're a WoW-junkie and For-the-Horde (scum)...., ehem, excuse me, this comic will tickle you. Unless you're a Forsaken.

Teh Gladiators

Website: Teh Gladiators
Teh Gladiators' story was initially about a rag-tag group of characters who fought in arenas as gladiators. Then things went awry and all that, then they were transported back in time and other unlucky things that kicks their rear-ends hard.
For some reason (ask the authors of the webcomic, not me), the story then focused on another tale, this time about the Horde, specifically the Tauren and such. The authors promised that the new story will be darker than the first, and less humorous.

Questionable Content

QC started out as a story between two people: Marten and Faye. Initially it was thought that the two, who became roommates, would become a couple. But complications from both of them led from one thing to another. In the process, their circle became bigger as more characters became friends of theirs.
